Hair removal continues to be the largest segment in the aesthetic laser market, however, skin rejuvenation is now a close second.  Continued growth is being driven by the increasing popularity and acceptance of hair removal.  With years of clinical and practical success, laser hair removal is a highly trusted procedure and, as such, patients are more confident in its efficacy and safety levels than in past.

As light emitted by the laser passes through the skin, it is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and hair shaft.  Heat from the laser damages the follicle, impairing its ability to grow.  Laser treatments are repeated over the growth cycle of the hair in order to affect the hair that is dormant.

There were 2,560,000 laser hair removal procedures performed in the U.S. in 2005.  Robust growth has occurred in recent years due to an increase in procedure accessibility as non-traditional physicians and spas are embracing this treatment to increase income streams.
It is forecasted that procedure volumes in the U.S. will continue to increase by an impressive 17.9% category growth rate from 2006 to 2010.
