The market for all acne treatments, including topical and pharmaceutical treatments, is enormous, with over $1.4 billion spent on acne treatments in the U.S. every year. In addition, according to WebMD, approximately 85% of all teenagers and young adults in the U.S. suffer from acne, and over 20% of all dermatologist visits are acne-related.
There are two major laser treatments available for acne. Anti-bacterial treatments reduce acne by using a topical and projecting light that specifically targets the P. Acnes bacteria, which causes acne. Sebaceous therapies use laser energy to damage the sebaceous gland, which produces oil, in order to reduce its activity thereby limiting the incidence of acne.
In 2005 there were 581,000 laser acne treatment procedures conducted in the U.S. This market is expected to grow by 8.9% between 2006 and 2010 and it is projected there will be 938,000 procedures conducted in the U.S. by 2010.
